| Emulating Mary and Joseph |
| On the feast of the Holy Family, let us remember that parents need not be materially wealthy in order to form a perfect family. St. Joseph and our Blessed Mother certainly did not have riches, but they did a marvelous job being our Lord's earthly parents. I pray that my husband and I remember that just as important as making sure our son is physically cared for is making sure that his intellect and soul are nourished. |

| Birthday Thanks |
Today is my mother's birthday. It is also Ducky's birthday! And tomorrow is my sister's birthday! I had spent last night baking two cakes: a vanilla train cake for Ducky, and a pineapple meringue cake for Mom and Leetle Seester. It was almost midnight by the time the baking finished. I was a little concerned about the meringue cake. The recipe had been from Mrs. S, a neighbor from the old country. All my previous attempts at making her cake had not replicated her cakes 100%. The cake batter was quite thick, and so the cake layer always turned out to be more cookie-like than cake-like. However, last night, I had made a serendipitous goof. Instead of using cake flour, like her recipe specified, I accidentally used AP flour, which was on the kitchen counter since I had used it for the train cake. Well! I had finally perfected Mrs. S's recipe! Yay!
Anyway, our family started today by attending mass. I certainly had many things to be thankful for this year: my beautiful son, my wonderful husband, my Mom on her road to recovery, my siblings, our health... Ducky is still too young to appreciate the significance of going to church on your birthday, but he was very enthusiastic when it came to "giving each other the sign of peace." Since the church was not packed the way it usually is on Sundays, Ducky decided to get out of our pew and greet the folks in the other pews! It was so cute, with him shaking old ladies' hands and me trailing after him.
Then, we went home, and while he watched an episode of Go Diego, Go!, DearHusband made his now-famous oven-fried chicken, and I finished decorating the train cake and assembling the pineapple meringue cake. My parents, sister, and my Aunt N (who was visiting from the old country) came at noon with presents and food. It was so good to see Aunt N after five years. I can't believe she's almost fifty - she looks ten years younger! I had wanted for her to tell me the latest about the folks back home but she was too busy fussing over Ducky.
Lunch was a blast, and my father had several helpings of DearHusband's chicken. It was a simple party with just the chicken, some pansit, warm broccoli salad, rice, and cake. I wasn't able to take any pictures of Ducky blowing out his birthday candles, because everytime we started singing "Happy Birthday" he would say "No!" Oh well, may be next year, he'll be more enthusiastic about his birthday. We were able to persuade him to open one of his presents (He seemed to prefer showing them the Quatro blocks we got him for Christmas).
My folks left after a couple of hours to visit my Grandmother. Ducky was so sad to see them go, he actually cried and wailed, "I want Gramma, I want Gramma!" It was heartbreaking.
He was napping ten minutes later.
It's hard to believe that it's been two years that DearHusband and I are parents to this wonderful child! I savor every moment I have with him and it is just amazing to see him grow! Sometimes I look at his baby pictures and I wonder where has the time gone?
I am just thankful that God has deemed me worthy to be the mother of this child.
Happy Birthday, Ducky! Happy Birthday Mom! Happy Birthday, Leetle Seester!
*** A prayer, on Holy Innocents Day. Dear Lord, bless the all the children of the world. Bless those who are sick. Bless those who have left this world. Bless those who died before they got born. Please touch the hearts of mothers who are contemplating ending the lives of their children. Amen. Labels: family |
